This guide walks you through setting up the Cline + Volcengine Ark Coding Plan — currently the most cost-effective AI coding solution for developers in China, with Lite starting at ¥40/month (¥9.9 first month promo), no VPN required, and access to multiple top-tier coding models.

Prerequisites

  • VS Code (or a compatible editor such as Cursor or Windsurf)
  • A Volcengine account (a ByteDance platform — you can register with a phone number)
  • About 10 minutes of setup time

Step 1: Subscribe to the Volcengine Ark Coding Plan

  1. Visit the Volcengine Ark Coding Plan page
  2. Choose a plan:
    • Lite: 9.9 CNY/month (first-purchase discount, regular price 40 CNY) — suitable for personal daily use
    • Pro: 49.9 CNY/month (first-purchase discount, regular price 200 CNY) — suitable for heavy users
  3. Complete the subscription using Alipay or WeChat Pay

Tip: The first-month discount is substantial. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, start with the Lite plan for a one-month trial.

Step 2: Obtain Your API Key

  1. Log in to the Volcengine Console
  2. Navigate to “API Key Management” or search for “Ark”
  3. Create a new API Key, then copy and save it securely

Step 3: Install the Cline Extension

  1. Open VS Code
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+X (Mac: Cmd+Shift+X) to open the Extensions Marketplace
  3. Search for Cline and click Install
  4. Once installed, the Cline icon will appear in the left sidebar

Step 4: Configure Cline to Connect to Volcengine Ark

  1. Click the Cline icon in the left sidebar to open the Cline panel
  2. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner to enter Settings
  3. In the API Provider dropdown, select OpenAI Compatible
  4. Fill in the following configuration:
API Key: The key you obtained in Step 2
Base URL: https://ark.cn-beijing.volces.com/api/coding/v3
Model: ark-code-latest

Note: The Coding Plan uses a dedicated endpoint /api/coding/v3 (different from the standard Ark API endpoint /api/v3). ark-code-latest is the recommended model ID for the Coding Plan — Ark will automatically route to the optimal coding model without requiring you to manually create an endpoint. If you prefer a specific model, you can also enter doubao-seed-code-preview-latest.

Step 5: Test the Configuration

  1. Type in the Cline chat box: Hello, please introduce yourself
  2. If you receive a normal response, the configuration is successful
  3. Try asking Cline to write some code: Write me a Python bubble sort function

Step 6: Start Using Cline

Basic Usage

Open any project file and describe what you want to do in Cline:

Refactor src/utils/auth.ts — extract common functions and add error handling

Cline will automatically:

  1. Read the relevant files
  2. Analyze the code structure
  3. Propose a modification plan
  4. Wait for your confirmation before applying the changes
  • New feature development: Create a new UserProfile component under src/components/, following the style of src/components/Card.tsx
  • Bug fixing: Line 45 of src/api/user.ts is throwing an error — analyze and fix it
  • Code review: Review the code in the src/services/ directory and identify potential issues

FAQ

Q: What are the request limits?

The Lite plan allows approximately 1,200 requests per 5-hour window; the Pro plan allows approximately 6,000. This is sufficient for daily coding. For intensive Agent tasks, the Pro plan is recommended.

Q: Which models are supported?

The Coding Plan includes:

  • Doubao-Seed-Code: ByteDance’s in-house coding model
  • DeepSeek-V3.2: Strong general-purpose capabilities
  • GLM-4.7: From Zhipu AI
  • Kimi-K2.5: From Moonshot AI
  • Kimi-k2-thinking: Moonshot AI’s reasoning variant
  • Auto mode (ark-code-latest): Automatically selects the optimal model

Advanced Tips

Custom System Prompts

In Cline’s settings, you can add a CLAUDE.md file (or .clinerules) to help Cline better understand your project:

# Project Guidelines
- Use TypeScript in strict mode
- Write function comments in Chinese
- Use the Result<T, E> pattern for error handling

Extend Capabilities with MCP

Cline supports MCP (Model Context Protocol), allowing you to connect to external tools such as databases, Figma, browsers, and more:

  1. Go to the MCP configuration section in Cline’s settings
  2. Add the MCP Server you need
  3. You can now use the additional tools in your conversations

Congratulations! You now have the most cost-effective AI coding setup available in China. If you have any questions, feel free to provide feedback on GitHub Issues.
