Strategy 1: Reference Only Relevant Files — Don’t “Read Everything First”
A common beginner habit: ask the AI to read all your project files before starting. This is the single biggest source of token waste.
Wrong approach:
“First read through the entire src/ directory, then help me fix the login bug”
Right approach:
“The login logic is in
src/auth/login.ts. The token validation on line 47 looks wrong — can you check it?”
Give the AI only what it needs. Most bugs involve 1–3 files, not the whole project.

A Counter-Intuitive Reminder
Saving tokens doesn’t mean writing shorter prompts.
If you’re so brief that the AI misunderstands you, and it takes 5 back-and-forth messages to get it right — those 5 exchanges likely consumed 3× more tokens than if you’d been clear upfront.
The real goal is high information density: conveying maximum meaning with minimum tokens. One clear sentence beats three vague ones every time.
